Classes and Workshops

This Fall, the Academy is offering one 12-week course (Comedy Decentralized), one 6-week course (Taking the Plunge: Stand-up Technique), and three Thursday workshops.  Due to scheduling challenges, all of the Thursday workshops will be held on Saturdays. That is why we refer to them as Saturday Workshops on the public side of our website. This frees up your Thursdays.

Class Descriptions

Comedy Decentralized

The flagship offering in 2013 is the 12-week course called Comedy Decentralized. This course is designed to take the student through a series of learning modalities:

  • Studying the techniques of the masters

  • Reading essays on comedic theory and history of comedy

  • Writing original scenarios, vignettes and routines, and

  • Class performance.

The lab will meet on Tuesday nights, from Sept. 15 through Dec. 6, in central Boulder, from 7-10 pm. The class performance will be held at the Outback Saloon on Friday, December 8. This class is limited to 12 students (or seekers, as we like to call them), and will involve a good amount of optional homework. Perefect for people with an appetite for learning and delving in.

The cost for early registration (until September 1) is $350. After September 1, the cost is $400. To register, click here. This price includes a print and electronic copy of the 220-page class reader, with selected chapters and bits from over a dozen books, essays and scripts. Three-4 guest teachers will be joining us from the Denver area for several classes, as well.

Taking the Plunge: A Course in Stand-Up

This class will meet 6 times and then do a class stand-up performance. No previous experience is necessary, other than your entire life history up until now, which is required. To get the juices flowing we will start by watching and mimicking some of the masters, and steal as much material as we can even before we start our warm-up games. We will also attempt to write and rehearse original material, and then get up there and face the tiger. Guest teachers will join us along the way, and give us tips. This class is priced at $180 until September 1, at which point the price may go up or down. Life is a gamble.
